When Outlook has been Exchange integrated, it is possible to recover a deleted e-mail once the Deleted Items folder has been emptied. This includes Outlook installed on a local workstation or desktop VM or Outlook connected to Exchange via Outlook Anywhere (RPC/HTTPS). Outlook Web Access on Exchange 2007 (SBS 2008) also has this feature.
Outlook and Exchange – Recover Deleted Items
The amount of e-mail available for recovery is set by the retention policies in the Exchange server. We tend to allow for 60 days.
To recover deleted items, click on the Deleted Items folder and then the Tools menu to bring up the Recover Deleted Items option.
Besides recovering e-mail removed from the Deleted Items folder, the same process can also be applied to the Junk Mail folder. Click on it and then the Tools menu to get to the deleted e-mail.
Having Outlook Exchange integrated, whether on a local server or via the Cloud, is probably one of the greatest ways to mitigate the impact of a disaster on the local machine, or server, or business location. Of course, good backups are a priority in the case of a local Exchange server.
