Windows 7 and QuickBooks – UAC Required

QuickBooks 2008/9 Multi-Currency Edition, which uses the legacy codebase that the non-multicurrency edition does not, elicits a UAC prompt when running on Windows 7.

The software will then run, but will not find the previous network mapped drive company file location.

We need to click the Open button which then shows us our company file and click through from there.

This is good news for us as we could not get our QuickBooks to run at all on Windows Vista in our own company domain due to the security policies in place here.

When we migrate to SBS 2008 and the new Group Policy structures available to us we may have had success with QB on Vista, but we will not go there anymore! :)

We did try to work with the Windows 7 Compatibility Mode for XP to see if that would resolve the UAC prompt but it did not.

Again, no complaints because at least it will run!

Once we migrate our domain to SBS 2008, it will be interesting to see how QB and Windows 7 work with the new GP setup.

If we have nothing but grief, there is always XP Mode on Windows 7.

  1. Intuit software drives me batty...We had issues with both their tax software & QuickBooks. They made use of the IE engine and the program broke when IE 7 was released. At the time, I had to run QuickTax on an XP/IE6 VM to get it to work properly.. It took ages for them to take care of that.

I'm still having issues with their apps requesting admin privs. Really they need to give their programmers the boot and write something that doesn't require admin privs. These days, that's just sloppy programming IMHO.

  2. Yes, we do indeed have a love/hate relationship with Intuit software that they have written as well as the software company products they have purchased and have since changed.

The code base for QB 2008/9 non-multicurrency edition works pretty good with Vista. We have not tested it with Win7 yet though. It is a complete rewrite of the code as I understand it. But, we cannot use it since we have transactions across multiple currencies.

  3. Anonymous,

You can solve this issue with Admin privileges by adjusting both the permissions on the Intuit folder and on the key in the registry. This will solve this particular problem.

    Thanks,
