Hardware Review: Logitech MX Revolution

We took care of a friend's I.T. business for about 3 weeks while he and his family were travelling about Europe.

At one point I had to pop into his office to manage some server related issues at his principle workstation.

He had the Logitech MX Revolution (product page) installed on it.

Logitech MX Revolution

The mouse is impressive to look at and even more impressive the first time it is used.

It has a really good well balanced weight to it with the glide pads on the bottom of the mouse providing a seemingly friction free movement.

It fits the hand really well.

The mouse's button positioning, the ability to utilize Windows Vista's Flip 3D feature via the side mounted scroll wheel, the main scroll wheel's ability to smooth scroll while viewing long Web pages or click scroll when working in Word Documents (changes on the fly) demonstrates that Logitech put a lot of thought into the mouse's abilities and features.

The driver that shipped with the mouse was out of date. Make sure to visit the product's download page beforehand: MX Revolution Download Page.

Once downloaded, the SetPoint for Windows Vista x64 installed flawlessly and provided the ability to customize all of the buttons and scroll wheel actions.

Those who need mousing accuracy, such as CAD operators or professional publishers, will appreciate this mouse.

All in all, this mouse has made an excellent addition to our key workstations!

By the way, the MX Revolution is both PC and Mac friendly.

But is it left-hand friendly?

Ah!

Yes, it is definitely not South Paw friendly!

Thank you for catching me on that. There really needs to be a concentrated lobby for left handed products. An initial Web search turned up very little in the way of products.

However, we did hit on: Logitech MX 610 Left-Hand Laser Cordless Mouse. So, it looks like things may be changing for the left handed market.

That concentrated lobby needs to purchase this mouse! If this mouse is successful for Logitech, there is no reason why they could not mirror the MX Revolution or other products for the left-handed market.

Having a left handed mouse will be a consideration for us as my daughter gets older and will start to use the computer as she is left handed.

Thanks again Chris.

Thanks for that.

Being a lefty myself, this is one of the reasons why I look for symmetrical mice - if it's right-hand only then it gets ignored, no matter how good it is.

Chris,

You are welcome.

There is one other realization for me as well: we do service a few left handed clients, so carrying around a portable cordless in our toolkit would be a good idea so as to not disturb their mouse setup.

The Logitech MX 610 is nice. I am left handed, but I use a right handed mouse. For some reason, I just never got the hang of it left handed and never had the precision. Back in April, I broke my right arm. Since I do most things left handed, it wasn't a problem, until I went to use a computer. My arm was broke bad enough that it wasn't in a cast, but rather I had plates installed, so I still had use of the arm and hand. I couldn't use a mouse. I tried a track ball and that didn't work. I finally found the MX 610 and ordered one. It just worked naturally for me, maybe it was the old made for both left and right mice that was the problem before. This mouse was great. I bought several more for the other systems I work at. I still use it today when I am wearing a brace that I have to wear as part of therapy. I can now use both hands. Philip, you might want to let your daughter try it both ways. Growing up, I batted right handed. I also play golf with right handed clubs. I can't write at all right handed, or brush teeth, or use a fork, or a lot of other things.

Lacy,

Since this post, Anne-Marie has developed quite a bit.

One of the surprising things that has happened is her adopting her right hand for certain tasks such as writing, drawing, and colouring which she does a tremendous amount of.

Once she can read, she will get some touch type training and we will see how she adopts to the mouse. We will make sure a left-handed mouse is available for her to use since both can be plugged into the system simultaneously.

Thanks very much for the insight!
